A Declare Label is often described as the “nutrition label” for building materials. It is issued by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) and is part of their broader mission to promote transparency and healthier, sustainable building practices.
In essence, a Declare Label discloses:
The ingredients in a product.
Where the product is manufactured.
Its end-of-life options (like recyclability or compostability).
Whether it complies with the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List requirements (i.e., avoiding hazardous chemicals).
The purpose is radical transparency: architects, designers, and specifiers can easily understand what's in a product and how "healthy" or sustainable it is.
Imagine a digitally printable wallcovering material with a Declare Label.
The label would tell you:
It's made of polyester and natural pigments.
Manufactured in [Country].
Contains no PVC or phthalates (both common Red List materials).
Designed for recycling at end of life.
Fully LBC Red List Free.
Architects & Designers (especially in sustainable projects)
Building Owners and Developers
Product Manufacturers targeting the green building market
Specifiers for health-conscious or eco-friendly environments (schools, hospitals, etc.)
