Release liner

A release liner is the protective backing layer used in self-adhesive substrates. It covers the pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) until the product is ready for application. The release liner ensures the adhesive stays clean, intact, and easy to handle during printing, cutting, and installation.

Common Materials:

  • Silicone-coated paper – most widely used due to its low cost and reliable release properties

  • PET or polyethylene films – offer higher dimensional stability, used in premium or specialty applications

  • Glassine paper – smooth, dense paper with good release characteristics and recyclability

Where It’s Used:

  • Self-adhesive vinyls (e.g., for signage, decals, wraps)

  • Window films

  • Floor and wall graphics

  • Labels and decals

  • Printable tapes and laminates

Functions:

  • Protects the adhesive layer before application

  • Provides stiffness for feeding through printers and cutting equipment

  • Supports accurate weeding, cutting, and registration in plotter-based workflows

  • Prevents premature bonding during handling or storage

Special Features (in Some Products):

  • Scored liners for easy peeling

  • Printed liners with branding or installation instructions

  • Structured liners to create air-release channels (e.g. in bubble-free vinyls)

Environmental Considerations:

  • While liners are often discarded after use, recyclable liners and liner recycling programs are becoming more common.

  • PVC-free and silicone-free liner systems are being developed to support greener printing workflows.
