A release liner is the protective backing layer used in self-adhesive substrates. It covers the pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) until the product is ready for application. The release liner ensures the adhesive stays clean, intact, and easy to handle during printing, cutting, and installation.
Common Materials:
Silicone-coated paper – most widely used due to its low cost and reliable release properties
PET or polyethylene films – offer higher dimensional stability, used in premium or specialty applications
Glassine paper – smooth, dense paper with good release characteristics and recyclability
Where It’s Used:
Self-adhesive vinyls (e.g., for signage, decals, wraps)
Floor and wall graphics
Labels and decals
Printable tapes and laminates
Functions:
Protects the adhesive layer before application
Provides stiffness for feeding through printers and cutting equipment
Supports accurate weeding, cutting, and registration in plotter-based workflows
Prevents premature bonding during handling or storage
Special Features (in Some Products):
Scored liners for easy peeling
Printed liners with branding or installation instructions
Structured liners to create air-release channels (e.g. in bubble-free vinyls)
Environmental Considerations:
While liners are often discarded after use, recyclable liners and liner recycling programs are becoming more common.
PVC-free and silicone-free liner systems are being developed to support greener printing workflows.
